Expectancy Sessions
About expectancy sessions | Where sessions are held | Dates
The prospect of a multiple pregnancy brings many different reactions and feelings to the expectant parent(s). Fortunately, for the majority of families the outcome is a positive and special experience, bringing with it many delightful memories and happy and healthy children.
For some, however, the experience may be difficult. Multiple pregnancies, by their very nature, include risks -- complications during pregnancy, prematurity, disabilities, and in some cases, the inevitability of loss. After the delivery, coping with two or more babies, and sometimes with toddlers and older children as well, can be overwhelming at times.
Newcastle Multiple Birth Club provides an "Expectancy Program" which provides informal discussion groups for expectant parents of multiples. The program is spread over three sessions within a school term. Any session 'missed' is available during the following term when the entire program is repeated, so expectant families are encouraged to attend early in the pregnancy to have the best opportunity of attending all sessions of the program.
Topics covered include: Special aspects of multiple pregnancy and birth, feeding/sleeping/bathing/equipment, establishing routines and organising chores, community and family support, prematurity; special needs, Mother's return to work; developmental, social and emotional aspects.
Those attending the program are able to ask questions, talk with new and experienced multiple birth parents, form new friendships, and gain confidence from the wide array of information available.
Sessions last for approximately 2 hours, including a short refreshment break. BACK TO TOP
